What is an Attached ADU?
In Massachusetts, an Attached ADU (Accessory Dwelling Unit) is a livable home of no more than 900sf built on the same lot as your primary residence.
The difference is in the name. Attached means the ADU is built onto or within the existing home. This is commonly referred to as an ADU attached to a house, and it often includes its own kitchen, bathroom, entrance, and utility connections.
These are sometimes called in-law apartments, basement apartments, or guest houses. No matter what you call them, they serve the same purpose. More space. More flexibility. More long-term value.
